      On April 8, 1976, Mr. Choochart Kalmapijit founded Maesa Elephant Camp in response to the Thai government’s tourism development plans for Chiang Mai. Initially leasing 30 rai (12 acres) and renting 6 elephants from the local Karen hill-tribe, the camp gained success through elephant riding and shows featuring tricks. It later expanded to include the Maesa Elephant Nursery and Thai Elephant Care Center, currently caring for 78 elephants.
