Key Highlights of a Chiang Rai Day Trip

  • Mae Khachan Hot Springs: A convenient stop on the main highway between Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai. It’s a great place to relax, use the restroom, and buy local snacks and souvenirs, including the famous small pineapples.

  • Wat Rong Khun (The White Temple): This is not a traditional temple but a modern art exhibit created by artist Chalermchai Kositpipat. He rebuilt the temple with his own money to serve as a center for Buddhist teachings and meditation.

  • Hill Tribe Villages: Chiang Rai is home to several different hill tribe communities, including the Long Neck Karen, Akha, and Lahu. Tourists can visit these villages to learn about their authentic daily lifestyles. There are souvenir shops where you can buy handmade items to support the tribes.

  • Mae Sai Market: Located on the border of Thailand and Myanmar, this bustling market offers a wide variety of products, from jewelry and electronics to clothing and snacks. It’s a great spot to experience the local trade and culture of both countries.

  • Golden Triangle: This is a famous viewpoint where the borders of Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar meet at the Mekong and Ruak rivers. A significant feature here is a large golden Buddha statue on a boat-shaped platform. You also have the option to take a boat trip on the Mekong River to Laos.
