  • Doi Inthanon National Park

Doi Inthanon is one of the most popular national parks in Thailand. It is famous for its waterfalls, a few trails, remote villages, viewpoints, sunrise/sunset watching, birdwatching and the all at-year-round cold weather at higher elevations. The main park entrance is about 70 km southwest of Chiang Mai city center.

Also known as “The Roof of Thailand“, Doi Inthanon National Park covers an area of 482 km² in Chiang Mai province, north of Thailand. The park is part of the Himalayan mountain range with elevations ranging between 800 and 2,565 meters asl. The highest peak in the park is Doi Inthanon Mountain, which is the highest mountain in Thailand. The park has high humidity and cold weather all year round.

The park is named in honor of the king Inthawichayanon, one of the last kings of Chiang Mai, who was concerned about the forests in the north of Thailand and wanted to preserve them. After his death, his remains were placed in the park as he ordered and the forest was renamed to Doi Inthanon.

The flora consists of moist evergreen cloud forests, sphagnum bog at elevations over 1,800 meters asl, dry evergreen, pine, mixed deciduous teak and dipterocarp forests at the lower elevations.

The rainy season is May to October with most rainfall from July to September. The rest of the year is quite dry with colder weather from November to February.

  • King & Queen Pagodas

The first of the chedis, Naphamethinidon, meaning ‘by the strength of the land and air’, was built in 1987 to honor the 60th birthday anniversary of King Bhumibol Adulyadej. The second chedi, Naphaphone Phumi Siri, meaning ‘being the strength of the air and the grace of the land’, was built in 1992 to honor the 60th birthday anniversary of Queen Sirikit.

There is a viewpoint with a good view over the west side of the park, a popular place to see the sunset.

  •  Stroll Angka Nature Trail

Ang Ka Luang Nature Trail

This trail is a broad walk which is approximately 366 meters in length. It takes about 30 minutes to complete the trail. It is at about 2,500 meters from the average mean sea level. Ang Ka, which means Crow’s Pond in Thai, could be considered as the highest natural water body in Thailand. Since it is surrounded by an evergreen forest, the weather here is pretty mild throughout the year. Additionally, the organisms living in this area are well-adjusted to such specific climatic conditions.

  • Hmong Market in Doi Inthanon
  • Wachirathan waterfalls

Wachirathan (Diamond Creek) flows down a granite escarpment on the way up to the summit of Doi Inthanon, the highest mountain in Thailand. Although segmented, its falls have a cumulative height of 80 m.(260 ft.) It is one of several waterfalls in the area.

  • Coffee farming at Baan Mae klang Luang

Ban Mae Klang Luang is a Karen village inhabited by the S’gaw people, an ethnic group. This village is a peaceful one with a relaxing natural environment around it. It’s located at somewhere around the 26th kilometer on the way up to Doi Inthanon.

This village was once a land for opium planting, but later, due to the kindness of King Bhumibol, the villagers switched to creative agriculture instead. Therefore, Ban Mae Klang Luang is a stunning place with flawless nature now, being loved by many tourists.

Ban Mae Klang Luang is a good place to visit if you want to learn about Thai agriculture. By visiting the place, you will see farms used for planting various things, including Ban Mae Klang Luang Stair Farm, which is in fact a river basin area on Doi Inthanon and used for rice growing.

This coffee shop is very natural. It doesn’t look like any café you’ve seen before, but instead it appears as a rustic wooden pavilion. Its coffee is fresh and served using the ancient way, not using modern coffee machines. You can drink there, take it home, or purchase it as a souvenir for someone you love.
